Abstract
Firearms were originally developed in an attempt by individuals to more effectively ensure their own security. The purpose of this article is to provide a brief overview of firearms and their development, and to discuss the issues of access to firearms in Poland and the use and applications of firearms by uniformed services. The aim is to bring attention to the dispute between supporters and opponents of common access to firearms. The article begins with a short overview of firearms – their main features, classification criteria and information about ammunition. The issue of the use and applications of firearms in Poland is also discussed, in particular within the context of uniformed services due to the fact that civilians have no access to such weapons. The final section brings attention to the debate regarding common access to firearms, listing the major arguments of both its supporters and opponents. This also allowed for an analysis of the role of firearms in society.
